Remember The ROADRUNNERS? Of course you don't! But go ask your parents; they'll remember them.
We first got together July 12, 1972, and in October we were crowned the 1972 Land O' Lakes District Champions. Since that time we've been International Quarterfinalists eight times, Minnesota Amateur Champions, appeared on HBO and national television, released three recordings, and performed at both The Dunes in Las Vegas and the pool hall in Deep River, Iowa. We've had a BLAST "doing our thing" and meeting some of the greatest people in the U.S. and Canada during the past THIRTY ONE years.
During that time, a lot has changed......and a lot has stayed the same. The schtick never changed. But when Wile E. fell down, he bounced right back up. Now recently, he was able to fall down, but we were never quite sure that he'd get back up. And the THOUGHT of giving him 'mouth-to-mouth' was enough for us to consider retirement! And when he did something really stupid, we didn't know whether it was planned or just a "senior moment."
Our streamlined, posh albums are now quaint .... obsolete!
On our early road trips, we reveled in 'guy talk' about wild women, wild afterglows and wild times. Lately, our road trips were filled with discussions on Medicare or the activity/inactivity of various bodily functions. In the '70's we did a contest set of "Put on Your Old Gray Bonnet" and "That Summer When We Were Young", and we spent HOURS in make-up trying to look old. Now we spend HOURS in make-up trying to look alive! And we can no longer guarantee the crispness of any performance after 7:30.
In September of 2003, Wile E. had a couple of strokes, and although he came through them in fine shape, there's no doubt that if he ever fell off the stage again, he'd never make it back up. (Actually, his mind seems clearer than it has been for the last 31 years!) So because we can no longer DO what we DO, it's time to let it go. So we'd like to say 'Good Bye and Thanks!' It was a GREAT run!! Barbershoppers are the greatest people in the world!!!!
Members of this popular, historic quartet (as pictured) are Norm Erickson - Tenor, Rich Slind - Lead, Norm Wolfe - Bass, and Dwight "Wile E." Mennenga - Baritone.
